The Fight Against the Death Penalty Continues

31/03/26

The Knesset approved the  death penalty legislation on 3/30/26 but thanks to 7,000 activists, the opposition raised its head and resisted. Hundreds joined the petition in the days leading to the finalizing vote. All 7,000 signatures were sent, along with personal letters, to undecided members of the opposition multiple times. Together we helped break the political silence surrounding this disastrous legislation. First, we ensured a strong opposition presence in the committee preparing the legislation, which helped delay the bill and introduce reservations. Ultimately, this led to a broad opposition vote against the death penalty.

This is not the end. We will continue the public struggle: in the High Court, in the media, in the Knesset, everywhere. Many civil society and human rights organizations worked alongside us, each in their own field. Petitions to the High Court were filed immediately. International media responded with sharp criticism, and European countries made it clear that the law complicates their economic and diplomatic relations with Israel.

In the coming days, we will plan the next stage of the struggle. We will not rest and we will not give up in the fight against a political death penalty promoted by the far right most destructive government  Israel has ever known.
