A different voice in Jerusalem

Thanks to small donations by 382 Zazim members, we flooded Jerusalem with a message of hope for a better future! Our message reached Jerusalem residents, Trump officials and journalists on their way to the US embassy opening ceremony. This is what it looked like: Pasted-image-at-2018_05_14-03_34-PM-compressedOnce again, Jerusalem Day saw tens of thousands participating the annual “flag march” through the Muslim Quarter in Jerusalem’s Old City. And like in years past, thousands chanted racist songs and shouted “death to Arabs” - forcing the merchants in the Muslim Quarter to shut down their shops for fear they’ll be attacked. Only a day after the hate march, Trump government officials and journalists from all over the world descended on Jerusalem to witness and ‘celebrate’ the new US embassy. But this year was also different. Thanks to hundreds of Zazim members, the tens of thousands who participated in the march of hate were greeted by our message of hope, tolerance, and a better future for all. And when Trump’s delegation celebrated the “historical moment” of the embassy move, our posters reminded them of the truth: Jerusalem is the capital of both peoples. The week of Jerusalem Day was particularly difficult - while Israeli and American officials were raising a toast to celebrate the “unification” of Jerusalem, more than 60 demonstrators were shot dead in Gaza, and over a thousand more were injured by live fire. Faced with hatred and racism, incitement and killing, our community chooses to raise a different message - a message of hope for a better, just, and more equal future for us all.
